Campervan WiFi and Connectivity: Staying Online Off-Grid

Reliable internet has gone from nice-to-have to essential for many campervan owners. Whether you're answering emails from a Dartmoor car park or streaming films on a wet Welsh campsite, the difference between a good and a bad connection is usually the kit you carry, not the network.

Your options

• Mobile hotspot from your phone is the zero-cost start. Fine for browsing, but the battery drains, the signal is only as good as the phone's position, and streaming eats your allowance.
• A dedicated 4G/5G router plugs into 12V and provides proper WiFi for the whole van. Expect to pay £80–£250 for the router.
• An external antenna is the single biggest upgrade. A roof or magnet-mount antenna typically costs £40–£120 and can turn a one-bar site into a solid connection.
• Starlink is the premium option for serious off-grid work, with a flat monthly fee and hardware around £200–£400. It needs a clear view of the sky and isn't cheap, but it's genuinely reliable almost anywhere.

In the UK, the network that's fastest on a map can be useless on the coast and hills. Test a few networks on a cheap SIM before committing to a router contract.

Data plans

UK networks sell dedicated data-only SIMs for routers, typically £10–£30 a month depending on data. Look for:

• Unlimited or large data allowances if you stream or work.
• Roaming included if you'll use the van in Europe.
• The ability to pause or cancel when the van's in storage.

Fitting tips

• Mount the router near a window or high on a shelf; van metal blocks signal badly.
• Power the router from a USB port or 12V socket so it doesn't eat your mains supply.
• An external antenna with a magnetic base works on metal roofs and removes when you park up.
