How to Choose the Right Campervan Layout for Your Lifestyle

The layout of a campervan decides how much you enjoy living in it far more than the badge on the bonnet. Two vans can share the same base vehicle and cost within a few hundred pounds of each other, yet one will feel like a home and the other a compromise. The trick is to choose a layout that matches how you actually plan to use the van, not how you imagine you might.

Start with the bed

Sleeping arrangements are the biggest single decision. Ask yourself honestly how often the bed will be made and unmade. If you plan long trips and want to wake up to daylight, a fixed rear bed with storage underneath is hard to beat. If you only take weekend trips and need seats during the day, a rock-and-roll bench that folds flat is more practical. Drop-down beds above the cab free up floor space but add height and can be fiddly with bedding. Families usually value two separate sleeping areas, which narrows the choice quickly.

Consider your kitchen habits

A full kitchen with a proper cooker and oven is wonderful for slow holidays, but it takes up space you might prefer for seating. Many UK buyers find a two-burner hob and a removable kitchen unit meets their needs perfectly well. If you cook mostly outdoors, look for a layout with an external barbecue point and skip the indoor oven entirely.

Decide on a toilet

The washroom is where budgets go. A fixed toilet and shower adds weight, cost and cleaning time but means you can park anywhere overnight and never queue for a campsite block. Measure the space you really have

Manufacturers quote the number of berths, but berths and comfort are different things. Look at the van with the bed made and the table down, because that is the space you will live in. Check headroom when seated, how easy it is to move past the kitchen, and whether storage is genuinely reachable. Search vans by layout to compare floor plans in your budget range.

Match the layout to the season

Finally, think about when you will use the van. If you camp from spring to autumn, ventilation and a good awning matter more than heating. If you plan winter trips to the Highlands, a diesel heater and double glazing become priorities, and a fixed rear bed that keeps you off the cold floor makes a real difference. A layout that suits year-round use is rarely the cheapest — but it is the one you will keep.
