12 Questions to Ask a Campervan Seller Before You Buy

Twelve questions every campervan buyer should ask a seller, from service history and leaks to how the van was stored and used.

A seller will tell you what the listing says, but the right questions reveal what the listing avoids. Over the years, buyers on our marketplace have found that a short set of pointed questions separates a genuinely cared-for van from a polished problem. Here are the twelve that matter most.

Ownership and usage

  1. How long have you owned it, and how many owners has it had in total? A long single ownership usually means a consistent history.
  2. Where has it been stored, and was it covered? Vans kept under cover age far more slowly than those left to the weather.
  3. How has it been used — weekends, long tours, or daily commuting? The use pattern affects wear on both the engine and the habitation side.
  4. Why are you selling now? Listen for the answer that involves a new van, a change in life plans, or a problem you should chase up.

Leaks and damp

  1. Has it ever leaked, and has anything been repaired? If the answer is "no", ask whether it has ever been damp-checked — those two answers should match.
  2. When was the last damp and habitation check, and can you see the certificate? A seller with a recent report has nothing to hide.
  3. Does the roof or any window seal show signs of repair? Painted-over seams and fresh sealant need a closer look, not a discount.

Servicing and condition

  1. What is the full service history, and are there gaps? A missing engine service is fixable; missing habitation services point to neglect.
  2. What has been replaced recently — tyres, battery, gas appliances, leisure batteries? Recent replacements are genuine value; be suspicious if nothing has ever been done.
  3. Are the tyres the same age, and when were the brakes last looked at? Even wear and fresh dates are signs of a well-maintained van.

The final three

  1. Can you demonstrate everything — water, gas, fridge, heating, toilet? A seller who is happy to run the systems gives you confidence; a seller who can't should give you doubt.
  2. Are there any outstanding finance, or any damage not mentioned in the listing? This is the question that catches the hidden problems, so ask it directly and watch the reaction.
Ask these in conversation rather than reading from a list. The follow-up questions matter more than the script — if a seller stumbles on anything, dig deeper.

When the answers check out, you can move to the viewing itself. Search our listings to shortlist vans you want to interrogate, and our viewing checklist tells you what to inspect when you get there.
