Campervan Buying Scams: How to Avoid Being Ripped Off

Campervans are an attractive target for scammers because they're expensive, desirable and often bought by people who are excited and in a hurry. A few minutes of caution saves thousands. Here are the scams to watch for in the UK.

The most common campervan scams

• The non-existent van. Advertised below market value, with "viewings by arrangement only" or a seller who's "working offshore". They ask for a deposit to hold it, then vanish.
• The cloned vehicle. A genuine-looking van that's actually a stolen or written-off vehicle with a copied identity. Check the VIN and the MOT history against the seller's paperwork.
• Hidden damp. A seller who "doesn't mind if you skip the damp check" is almost always hiding something. Damp repairs cost £1,000-£10,000.
• The finance carousel. A van sold while still on finance, so a lender can repossess it after you pay. Always check the HP register.
• Deposit-before-viewing. Genuine sellers never need a deposit to let you look at a van.

How to protect yourself

1. Always view in person and insist on a full damp check and mechanical inspection.
2. Run an HPI-style check on the VIN to reveal finance, theft and write-off history.
3. Cross-check the MOT history and service records against the mileage.
4. Pay by bank transfer to a UK account in the seller's name - never gift cards or crypto.
5. Walk away from anything that feels pressured. Real vans are sold at a reasonable pace.

Red flags in listings

• Asking price well below similar vans - check campervans for sale to benchmark.
• Stock photos or blurry images that never change.
• The seller can't answer basic questions about the van's history.
• Multiple identical listings under different accounts.
• A van "abroad" that needs a deposit to bring home.

What a legitimate purchase looks like

A genuine private seller shows you the full service history, lets you inspect freely, and is happy for you to take the van for a professional check. A reputable dealer offers a warranty and a clear invoice. If the process feels rushed, that's your signal to stop.

The cheapest campervan in the country is rarely a bargain - it's usually a problem someone else is trying to unload. Cheap first, problems second.
