The Best Campervan Routes Through England

England does not have one famous road-trip route in the way Scotland does, and that is partly the point — it has dozens. These are the routes that reward a campervan, grouped by region, with practical advice for each.

Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors

Start at Skipton and loop up through Malham and the Dales to Richmond, then across the Moors and down the coast to Whitby. This is pub-stop country: market towns, dry-stone walls and some of England's best walking. Sites cost £20 to £35 a night and cluster around Grassington, Reeth and Helmsley.

The Cotswolds and the West Country

The Cotswolds is a gentle, pretty loop through Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water, best enjoyed outside summer weekends. For coast instead, the Jurassic Coast from Lyme Regis to Swanage is dramatic and busy — go in May or September for the calmest experience.

Norfolk, Suffolk and the east

The north Norfolk coast around Wells-next-the-Sea, Brancaster and Holkham offers huge beaches and big marshland skies, with a scattering of small, well-kept sites. The coastal road between Wells and Hunstanton is a lovely, low-stress drive with plenty of pull-in spots for a brew. The Broads and the Suffolk coast further south are quieter still, and the roads are kind to motorhomes.

Northumberland and the Borders

The most dramatic empty coast in England: Bamburgh, the Farne Islands and the castle country between Berwick and Alnwick. Sites are affordable and rarely full, and the beach at Budle Bay is a genuine stunner.

Practical advice for English touring

• Book high-season weekends ahead; midweek is far quieter.
• Popular spots like the Lake District and Dartmoor get congested — go early or travel in the shoulder season.
• Lanes are narrow: plan for your van's length and width on minor roads.
