Campervan Security: Locks, Alarms and GPS Trackers

A campervan is a mobile home full of expensive gear, which makes it a target. Theft of vans — and the bikes, tools and electronics inside them — is a real worry across the UK. The good news is that most thieves go for easy targets, and a visible security kit is often enough to send them elsewhere.

Locks

Mechanical locks are the first line of defence because they're visible and physical.

• Wheel clamps fit over the wheel and make the van undriveable. Good ones cost £100–£250 and are a strong deterrent.
• Steering wheel locks are cheap (£20–£60) and instantly visible through the windscreen.
• Deadlocks and slam locks on the habitation door stop thieves opening it with a quick tool attack.
• Ground anchors and chains help when storing bikes and gear inside the van.

A van that looks hard to steal gets skipped. Park it so a wheel clamp is the first thing a passing thief sees.

Alarms

A campervan alarm does more than make noise — modern units also alert your phone.

• Professional-grade alarms cost £150–£400 fitted and add door, tilt and movement sensors.
• Tilt alarms are genuinely useful: they trigger if the van is lifted for a tow.
• Combine the alarm with a visible warning sticker and the deterrent effect multiplies.

GPS trackers

If the worst happens, a GPS tracker tells you and the police exactly where the van is. Insurance companies increasingly expect them on high-value vehicles, and some offer premium discounts.

• Subscription trackers cost around £150–£300 to fit plus a monthly fee of roughly £5–£15.
• Self-installed trackers with SIM cards are cheaper but less integrated with the vehicle.
• Look for one with geofencing so you get an alert the moment the van moves outside a set area.
