Campervan Bed Layouts: Fixed vs Rock and Roll Beds

How you sleep decides how you travel. A van that forces you to rebuild the bed every evening quickly grinds you down, while the right layout feels like a home on wheels. The two big UK camps are fixed beds and rock and roll beds, with a third option — the pop-top — for minimalists.

Rock and roll beds: flexible but fiddly

A rock and roll bed is a bench that folds into a double bed, usually over a steel frame. It keeps the day space open and is the classic motorhome club layout. The downsides are real: you rebuild it every evening, you sleep on a seam, and the mattress is often thin. A good rock and roll bed with a proper mattress (£200–£400 to upgrade) is fine for weekends but taxing for a season on the road.

Fixed beds: comfort at the cost of space

Fixed rear or island beds trade day space for a made-up bed you simply climb into. They suit couples and anyone with an early start or a dodgy back. The trade-offs are space in the day, access — rear beds often need a clamber — and less flexibility for carrying bikes or bulky kit. If you live in the van for months, most people sleep better in a fixed bed and adapt the day space around it.

Comparing the main options

1. Rock and roll — cheapest, most flexible day space, slower daily setup.
2. Fixed transverse bed — comfortable, quick, but blocks rear loading and usually needs a big van.
3. Fixed longitudinal (side) bed — easiest access, great storage beneath, but narrows the aisle.
4. Pop-top roof bed — two berths in the roof, free floor space below, lower headroom in the tent section.

What to test before you buy

• Lie on the actual mattress, not just the demo board.
• Check bed length against the tallest person — many UK vans are 1.85m short.
• Time the setup: can you do it in under two minutes, alone?
• Look at under-bed storage access — can you reach it with the bed down?
• Check the base van's payload can carry the bed frame and occupants.

Converted vans vs purpose-built

Panel vans like the VW Transporter and Ford Transit Custom dominate the converted market, usually with rock and roll or pop-top layouts. Coachbuilt motorhomes and larger vans (Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer) offer fixed beds at the cost of size and parking ease.
