Clever Campervan Storage Ideas for Small Spaces

A campervan has less storage than a shed, but it moves at 60mph with everything you own. The golden rule is to store by frequency of use: daily kit at hand height, weekly kit under seats, and rarely-used gear in the loft or the boot.

Start with the weight limit

Every UK campervan has a gross vehicle weight printed on the V5, and you do not want to bounce near it. Packing for a week typically adds 200–300kg of people, water, food and gear. Weigh heavier items (bikes, awnings, batteries) before you load, and keep bulky kit over the rear axle where it least upsets handling.

Vertical space is wasted space

• Use the wall beside the bed for a fabric organiser holding books, glasses and torches.
• Hang a magnetic strip on the galley for knives and tins.
• Add shelves to the upper cabinets that most vans leave half empty.
• Fix small hooks to cabinet doors for mugs and tea towels.

Fill the dead spaces

The gaps over wheel arches are ideal for shoes and level packs. The area under the bed swallows the big stuff: chairs, table, awning and levelling ramps. Buy vacuum bags for duvets and out-of-season clothes — they shrink a week's bedding to a fraction of its size. A shower shoe organiser over the inside of a wardrobe door holds toiletries without a single shelf.

Keep things from becoming projectiles

Everything in a van rattles, slides or flies. Bungee cords across open cubbies, non-slip shelf liner and soft storage cubes stop the chaos on a bumpy A-road. Tuck heavy pans low, keep the gas locker locked, and stow anything fragile in towels rather than newspaper.

Use the outside

Roof boxes add serious capacity for awnings, mats and muddy boots, though they add height — check your van's total height against barriers and drive-throughs. A bike rack and a tow bar box are alternatives for the truly bulky. On site, the awning becomes a second shed for chairs, windbreaks and the kids' bikes, keeping the van itself calm.

Declutter before you organise

The cheapest storage upgrade is getting rid of stuff. If you did not use it on the last two trips, it goes. Most of us overpack cooking equipment, and under-pack layers.
