Campervan Paperwork for Selling: What the Buyer Needs
A buyer can fall for your van and still walk away if the paperwork doesn't add up. Here's every document you need to sell a campervan in the UK.
A buyer can fall in love with your van on the forecourt and still walk away if the paperwork doesn't add up. In the UK, selling a campervan properly means handing over a clean V5C, a valid MOT and the service and habitation history that prove the van has been looked after. Here's everything you need.
The V5C logbook — the legal essential
The V5C (the logbook in your name) must be signed and sent to the DVLA as soon as you sell the van. You complete the "sell or transfer" section, give the buyer the green slip and post the rest off. Never hand the whole logbook over — and never sell a van with a logbook in someone else's name. That's a warning sign for any buyer.
A valid MOT
The van needs a current MOT at the point of sale, and buyers will check the online MOT history. A fresh MOT is a strong selling point; an expired one is a deduction. If the MOT is due soon, get it done before you list so there are no questions at collection.
Service and maintenance history
Service records tell the buyer how the engine's been treated. A stamped service book or a file of invoices with dates and mileage is worth real money. It doesn't need to be a main dealer — a trusted independent garage with detailed records is just as convincing.
Habitation check and damp report
Motorhomes and campervans need their habitation side inspected too. A recent habitation check — electrics, gas, water, damp — reassures buyers that the living area is sound. A damp report showing a dry van is one of the most valuable documents you can produce.
Receipts for recent work
Any recent work helps: new tyres, a battery, a fresh service, an awning or solar panels fitted by a professional. Receipts show the money you've spent and give a buyer confidence about what's coming next.
Gather everything into one folder before you list. A buyer who can flick through a full history in two minutes is a buyer who signs quickly.
Transferring ownership
On sale day, complete the V5C correctly, write a receipt with both names, the price and the date, and keep a copy for yourself. Explain to the buyer how to tax the van and how the logbook transfer works — it's a small thing that makes the whole deal feel professional.
When the paperwork's in order, list your van with total confidence. The right documents turn a "maybe" into a sale.
