How to Handle Campervan Buyer Interest and Close the Deal
From first enquiry to keys swapped — how to respond to buyers, run viewings and test drives, take deposits and close the deal safely.
Getting enquiries is only half the battle. Between the first message and the moment the keys change hands, there's a minefield of viewings, test drives, offers and payment — and it's here that deals get won or lost. Here's how to handle buyer interest from start to finish.
Reply fast and answer properly
Respond to every enquiry the same day, ideally within hours. Answer the questions buyers actually ask — history, habitation check, any known faults — and be honest. A fast, straightforward reply marks you as a serious seller and keeps your van top of mind.
Qualify before you book a viewing
A few quick questions save you wasted weekends. Ask when they're looking to buy, whether they've owned a campervan before, and whether they've got finance or a part exchange in place. Genuine buyers are happy to answer; tyre-kickers get vague. Always confirm a time and exchange a phone number so you can call if plans change.
Make the viewing count
Meet in daylight, somewhere safe and easy to find. Have the van clean, warm if possible, and the paperwork ready to show. Walk through the van's story as you go: service history, recent work, how you've used it. Encourage questions and demonstrate the systems — preparation pays off at this exact moment.
Test drives done properly
Take a copy of their driving licence and insurance details before anyone gets behind the wheel. Stay in the van or follow in your own car, and agree the route in advance. A short, clear test drive reassures the buyer without putting your van or yourself at risk.
Turn interest into a deposit
When a buyer says yes, get something on paper. Take a deposit to hold the van, agree a collection date and put both in writing. A small deposit converts interest into commitment — and if the buyer changes their mind, it compensates you for the time lost. See how to negotiate if the price is still in motion.
Close the deal safely
On collection day, accept cleared funds only — a bank transfer or bank draft. Check the money has landed before releasing keys and paperwork. Complete the V5C transfer section, hand over the keys, history and any accessories, and sign a simple receipt. Then notify your insurance company.
A clean, fast, professional process makes buyers feel safe — and safe buyers are the ones who actually complete.
When you're ready for your next sale, list your van and let the enquiries begin.
